365: We’ll Miss Our Mailman

I know it may sound strange, but we are going to miss our mailman. We found out this week that he was retiring and that today would be his last day.

He is such a nice guy. Whenever he delivers a package to the door, he has dog treats for our dogs even though they go crazy barking at him. He remembers a lot about people. We always know when he is on vacation. Usually because we get the wrong mail or a letter for someone else.

He also delivers in the area where my parents live. My mom’s dog Allie goes nuts whenever she sees the mail truck and pulls to go see him. She knows he’ll have a treat for her when he passes. She is going to be really disappointed next time she sees that mail truck.

So, we wish him well in his retirement, but are sad to see him go. Miranda bought a card for him and baked him some of her awesome cupcakes and left them in the mailbox for him. We hope he enjoys being the one to get the treat this time.

The 365 Project in Review

In December 2010 I decided to try a 365 project. This would entail posting a new photograph every day of the 2011 year. I decided early on that “new” meant “taken within a day.” I knew up front that not every photo I published was going to be a work of art. I knew that many of them would be snapshots of things done that day. But I was hoping it would force me to go out and shoot more. If I had to post something, then I had to shoot.

Wesley Cross - November

I know I got some great shots doing this that I never would have gotten otherwise. I also know that I posted a good many photos that I never would have posted if I didn’t have to. They were photos that I didn’t feel were up to my level of photography. They were photos that I would never use for a client. Most of those were shot in a hurry or without the right equipment because I needed to get something up. I was probably cheating myself in doing so, but sometime my other work just got in the way. And when that other work is paying the bills, that’s what takes precedence.

Minnesota Frost - October

So I will analyze the photos I took and pick out some of the ones I thought were good. These will be the “Best of the Month” photos. There may be a couple second place winners in good months.

String of Lights: December

My wife Miranda was key to me even getting this done. There were quite a few times she would say to me at the end of a long day, “Did you post today?” Most times I had taken the photo and not processed it, or not uploaded it. So I would get on the computer again and do so. I even got out of bed a couple times when I woke up realizing I hadn’t posted that day.

Lake Reflection - September

So I believe that I did learn a lot from the experience. I learned that I need to carry a camera with me more often. This has been a problem of mine for a while. I have big DSLRs with multiple heavy lenses. For me to go take a photo is an ordeal that is undertaken, not something I do lightly.

Water Droplets on Leaf - August

I tried using a Canon G-12 to supplement this. It was pretty good for a point and shoot, but it really didn’t feel right to me and it just didn’t have the control I like to have in a camera. Even with RAW capabilities and full manual controls, it was not a DSLR and it turned into a large point and shoot camera. Actually, it was too large as it was too big to slip in a pocket. Only one of the 12 monthly favorites used the G-12, and that is because it was the only camera I had with me in Minnesota. I really missed my DSLR there.  With all these disappointments,  I sold it.

Grasshopper - July

My replacement for it was the new iPhone 4S this year. I did take a few photos with my older iPhone 3GS, but that camera was terrible. The new 4S camera is quite good, but still functions as a point and shoot. It has been interesting for me and saved me quite a few times, but it is still not my favorite camera to use.

The Millpond - June

I have also come to rely on and really enjoy the iPad. It allowed me to load, look at, edit and upload photos taken on my camera to this blog while I was out of town. It would be hard to imagine doing it without it.

Bloody Marsh Flowers - May

So, how many of my photos am I happy with? Well, that number is probably low. You would probably not have seen a lot of these shots if I wasn’t forced to put them up.

Tree-Lined Road - January

I am pretty picky and critical of my own work. Some of the shots were downright awful and I regret not having taken time out of the day to work on them more. But sometimes that was unavoidable due to other commitments. Being not only a photographer but a graphic designer, my work is not always about photos. And sometimes I would be shooting all day long, but it was for a magazine or other publication in which I couldn’t post anything about it until it was on newsstands. It was frustrating to shoot good shots all day and then have to shoot more for the 365.

Butterfly Weed Buds - April

So, I ask you to vote on the best photograph I took this year for my 365 Project. I have chosen what I think are the best photos for each month. Choose which of these you think is the best of the year. These are not necessarily the best photos I shot all year, but the best of the 365 photos I shot.

Cemetery Flowers - March

Thank you for following my posts. I really appreciate all the comments both here and on facebook. I will try to keep posting photos in 2012 as they get taken, but it will NOT be everyday again.

Marina Sunset - February

365: Great Heron Redux

So I went back to Silver Lake today thinking the turtles would be on their log. After all, it was cold out but sunny, so I figured they would be sunning themselves. I guess it is too cool in the air and the water is warm because none were in sight. There was a heron on the side of the lake though. Was it the same heron I photographed before? Maybe. This time he was much closer and I had a longer lens with me. I like the added bits of warm colors from the changed leaves. There were some interesting ducks there to shoot as well. I may post one of those tomorrow.

365: The Sky on Fire

This is just a photo of the clouds and a setting sun. For about 5 minutes or so, the sky was bright orange and purple. A few minutes later and it was back to a dull blue as it got darker and darker. I was able top add a little bit of interest to the shot by showing some trees at the bottom, but then if shot any lower you would have seen ugly rooftops. It is all about the crop.

365: McKinnon Airport

I had an appointment near the airport near sunset, so I thought I would try to get a photo of it for today. The sunset was making some pretty colors in the sky and there were a few planes out to give it some interest.

McKinnon is a pretty small airport and mostly seems to cater to a richer clientele who have their own planes. There aren’t any commercial flights out of here that I know of. I have flown out of here once on a Cessna for a magazine shoot around the island. Right now it is in need of some funding for repairs according ot the paper.

365: A Photography Gift

I got a few cool photography gifts this year. This one is the Joby Gorillapod. It is a neat little bendable tripod you can mount almost anywhere. I also got some great gifts from my in-laws like Rogue Gels, a three-head flash bracket, an arm for my ring flash and a Peak Design Capture which allows you to hang your camera from a belt or pack strap. I am really looking forward to using both the Joby and the Capture next time I go hiking.

365: Christmas

I missed posting yesterday! Well, if there is anytime where doing things with the family outweighed posting to the blog, it was yesterday. We were pretty busy all day. We started with gifts for the dogs in the morning. They loved all their new toys as you can see from the photo of Brutus who is resting after chewing on his new toy. He is also modeling his new collar.

Then we had gifts with the family, went to see War Horse (an awesome movie), and had dinner. Everything was great and bed time was welcome.

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas.

365: The Christmas House

Every area has one. The one person who goes absolutely crazy with the Christmas lights. The one who must have taken weeks to put them all up. The one who every goes to see. That’s this house in Sea Palms. This is no small yard either. That front hedge was about 4-5 feet tall. They had lights everywhere and there were cars parked all over who had come to see it. We will definitely start adding it to our must-see list every year.

365: String of Lights

These lights are hanging in our backyard around our patio. I took the photo with a really shallow depth of field in order to show both sharpness and extreme bokeh in the same shot of the same item. Look how small the in-focus bulb’s light is and then look how big it is at the extreme blurry end.

It certainly helps in this situation that the color of our house is this green color. Too bad there wasn’t just a little bit of red in there somewhere.

365: What’s SUP?

Stand Up Paddleboarding or SUP has been getting very popular. I am starting to see more and ore of them. Today I saw this guy cruising along the beach and I took some shots. He passed by a bunch of seagulls on the sand which added some more interest to the scene.

Davis Love III opened a SUP and Putt shop in Redfern Village. Southeast Adventures in the SSI Village also do some paddleboarding. I’d like to try it sometime.
